Abusive carer is jailed for 8 years November 2002 A CHILDREN'S home worker was jailed for eight years yesterday for sexually abusing two boys in his care for more than eight years. John Porteous, 69, committed depraved acts on the young boys after luring them into the 150ft bell-tower which once dominated the world- famous Quarriers Children's Village. They were only eight and 12 when the abuse started. His reign of depravity lasted from 1969 till 1977. The jury at the High Court in Glasgow took seven hours to find Porteous guilty. The court had heard how Porteous, who was a cottage "father" in the Quarriers Village near Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire, abused his victims in a secret room in the clock tower. One victim, now 40, went on to commit sexual offences against a little girl, aged 10. It was after he was convicted that he told what had happened to him at Quarriers. Another victim, now 46, said he was 12 when the sex attacks began, and he ran away five or six times. |
